Mantle - meaning a cloak or shawl, and as a verb, to envelop - takes its inspiration from the carved drapery of ancient Greek & Baroque sculpture. It hovers at the point between concealment & emergence, assistance or resistance, capturing a sense of graceful, upward movement through & beyond.

Part of the power of drapery was due to the outdoor locations of ancient sculpture, where the changing environment through the day would create the visual illusion of movement within the carved fabric. The location of the sculpture in a sense completes the work. Human hands yet shimmering gold, cloth flowing like metal, we are unsure of exactly what we are seeing or when, something & somewhere between classical & contemporary sculpture.
